Usually modern homes don t have enough chimney space but here is some advice if you do find birds in your chimney.

They start with big sticks and keep piling them up until they hold firm then they add more material until it is at a level where it provides a safe base for the nest part of the construction.
Just to give you a bit of my own personal background i m a nest recorder bird ringer who is actively involved with over 300 nesting birds.
Guano and white splash on your roof near the chimney are other things to look for.
Swallows jackdaws and swallows make their homes in chimneys but it s important to note that the chimneys on modern homes are not wide enough to accommodate their nests.
They might still find chimneys on old cottages attractive however.
